About this title
Plastic Beauty (Japanese title: Downtime) is a Japanese Netflix original series in which a plastic surgeon who left her university hospital after an emergency operation clashes at a clinic with a cosmetic surgery clinic director whose motto is "saving people through beauty."
It was released exclusively worldwide on Netflix on September 17, 2026, with all eight episodes available at once. Its English title is Plastic Beauty. Netflix said that after portraying the hidden side of little-known worlds, such as land fraud and the real estate industry in Tokyo Swindlers, it had chosen the cosmetic surgery industry as its subject this time. Together with Netflix, the production team researched today's cosmetic surgery industry and built an original story. The Japanese title, Downtime, refers to the recovery period after a procedure while swelling and bruising subside, which Netflix likened to the time before a chrysalis becomes a butterfly. The main theme is by Yuta Bandoh, with music by MON/KU and Sayaka Aoki, and a 20-track soundtrack was released on the same day as the series.
It is directed by Yuki Saito of Unmet: A Neurosurgeon's Diary (2024) and written by Junya Ikegami, who wrote the film The Blood of Wolves and the Netflix series The Queen of Villains. Harue Miyake, producer of Tokyo Swindlers, and Katsuhito Motegi, who worked on directing The Queen of Villains, serve as producers, with Shinichi Kudo as development producer, and K2 Pictures handled production. Director Saito said he spent six months on research and also took part in developing the scripts. He said they met three or four people per topic, from people considering cosmetic surgery for the first time to people who had spent tens of millions of yen or more on five or six operations. They also interviewed long-established cosmetic clinics, including Takasu Clinic, which supervised the series, as well as doctors who had just opened their practices. The director said there is probably no episode or character that does not reflect that research. The patients' faces before surgery, during downtime and after surgery were made individually for each actor by the team of special makeup artist Amazing JIRO.
Mayu Matsuoka plays plastic surgeon Fumi Numata, and Riisa Naka plays Rin Tohyama, director of the Tohyama Cosmetic Surgery Clinic. When an emergency operation Fumi performed out of her belief in "saving lives through medicine" becomes a problem, she has to leave the university hospital where she worked, and Rin recruits her. Having always rejected cosmetic surgery, Fumi joins Rin's clinic in order to expose the industry's dark side. At home she lives with her mother, Taeko (Hiromi Nagasaku), who runs a snack bar, and because of the family's debts, a loan shark, Ren Makihara (Riku Hagiwara), comes calling. Shotaro Mamiya plays the clinic's vice director, Rui Komiya; Minami Tanaka plays head nurse Nanami Todoroki; and Atsuro Watabe plays Rin's father, Arata Tohyama, who founded the clinic. The actors playing patients who come to the clinic, including Hana Amano as an aspiring voice actor and Hina Kagei as a model, also appear in special makeup. Director Saito said that making Fumi a smoker was screenwriter Ikegami's idea, explaining that they wanted to portray her as someone with a contrarian streak not only toward cosmetic surgery but toward many things in the world.
It ranked No. 1 in Netflix's Japan TV chart for three consecutive weeks from its first week (the tracking weeks from September 14 to October 4). On the global Non-English TV chart, it ranked No. 5 in its first week, which counted only four days after its release, No. 2 in its second week (September 21–27) with 5.1 million views, and No. 5 in its third week, and it also made the Top 10 in a number of countries and territories. At the production announcement, Mayu Matsuoka described Fumi not as a hero who helps anyone and everyone, but as someone with plenty of prejudices and a rough way of speaking, who acts only when something makes sense to her. In an interview after the release, Riisa Naka said that at first she put her energy into making Rin come across as cold, and that because Rin is a character who does not let her emotions show on her face, she was difficult to portray. This was the first time the two actresses worked together. Producer Harue Miyake explained that the series looks at cosmetic surgery from the perspectives of both doctors and patients.
