About this title

Boyfriend on Demand is a 10-episode Netflix romantic comedy starring Jisoo and Seo In-guk about Seo Mi-rae, a webtoon producer who starts going on dates with her ideal men on screen through Boyfriend on Demand, a dating subscription service set in virtual reality.

Netflix released all 10 episodes at 5 p.m. on March 6, 2026. The Netflix Korea page rates it 15+. It was co-produced by WhyNot Media, Baram Pictures and Kakao Entertainment. Netflix announced the production and the casting of Jisoo and Seo In-guk on February 20, 2025. On Netflix's Global Top 10, it ranked No. 4 on the Non-English TV list for the week of March 2–8, which included its release date, with 2.6 million views (hours viewed divided by runtime), and rose to No. 1 the week of March 9–15 with 4.8 million views. It spent four weeks in total in that list's Top 10.

It is directed by Kim Jung-sik, who made TVING's Work Later, Drink Now (2021) and tvN's No Gain No Love (2024), and written by Namgung Do-young. Namgung recalled that a few years earlier a producer had first pitched the idea of "subscribing to a boyfriend every month," but that the idea of a person subscribing to another person didn't click, which made it hard to write. Then the writer began to wonder what it would be like if the other party were an AI, and that, Namgung explained, is how the premise of a "virtual dating subscription service" weaving together AI, virtual reality and romance came about. While shaping the heroine, Namgung read a passage about a life kept at a distance from love in Deborah Levy's essay The Cost of Living, and settled on the story of a woman who fears the risks that come with dating real people. At the press conference, Kim introduced the series as having started from the question "What if you could subscribe to romance?" and said he made it in the mindset not of a director but of someone developing the Boyfriend on Demand device.

Jisoo plays webtoon producer Seo Mi-rae, and Seo In-guk plays Park Kyeong-nam, Mi-rae's coworker and a rival webtoon producer. Early in the story, Mi-rae hears that her ex-boyfriend Se-jun (Kim Sung-cheol) is getting married, is put back in charge of Yun Song (Gong Min-jeung), a difficult artist who once gave her a hard time, and keeps butting heads with Kyeong-nam, who spars with her at every turn. In episode 1, "The Futures of You and Me," the worn-out Mi-rae gets the chance to try Boyfriend on Demand, a virtual dating subscription service. Her first date in the virtual world is Choi Si-woo (Lee Soo-hyuk), the third-generation chaebol heir who is the hero of Yun Song's hit webtoon, and in episode 2, "Cliche or Classic," Mi-rae loses her heart to that first date. Ha Young plays Mi-rae's friend Lee Ji-yeon, Jo Han-chul, Yoo Seon-ho and Lee Hak-joo are among those playing people in the real world, and Seo Kang-joon, Lee Jae-wook, Lee Hyun-wook, Ong Seong-wu, Kim Young-dae and Jay Park make special appearances as boyfriends in the virtual world.

This is Jisoo's first leading role in a romantic comedy. At the press conference, she described Mi-rae as someone who has both a drive to try new things and a fear of change, and said many viewers her age would relate to her. According to reports from the press conference, Jisoo appears in more than 95% of the scenes, and Kim explained that Mi-rae is a character who has to show both her real-world homebody side and her glamorous side in the virtual world. After the release, some reviews found her acting in everyday scenes natural while others found her vocal delivery in emotional scenes lacking, and Kim singled out the response that Jisoo and Mi-rae were a good fit as a review that stayed with him. Namgung explained that Mi-rae, her friend Ji-yeon and the artist Yun Song each represent one of three positions: "a woman who has chosen not to date," "a woman who dates passionately" and "a woman who wants to date but can't." In the combined TV-OTT drama buzz rankings for the first week of March released by Good Data Corporation's FUNdex, it ranked No. 1.
