About this title

Set in a fictional 21st-century South Korea where the constitutional monarchy has endured, this drama follows the romance between Seong Hui-ju, a chaebol daughter who is nonetheless a "commoner" by rank, and Grand Prince Ian, a king's son who is allowed to have nothing of his own. The script won an MBC screenwriting contest and is writer Yoo Ji-won's debut.

It aired in 12 episodes as an MBC Friday-Saturday drama from April 10 to May 16, 2026. MBC co-produced it with Kakao Entertainment, and Park Joon-hwa, director of What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and Alchemy of Souls, co-directed with Bae Hee-young. It was initially slated to air in the second half of 2025, but its scheduling was pushed back and it aired in spring 2026.

IU plays Seong Hui-ju, CEO of Castle Beauty and the second, illegitimate child of the Castle Group chairman, and Byeon Woo-seok plays Grand Prince Ian, Yi Wan, the previous king's younger brother and uncle to the young king. Roh Sang-hyun plays Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo, Grand Prince Ian's longtime friend and romantic rival, and Gong Seung-yeon plays Queen Dowager Yoon Yi-rang, the young king's mother. Because it was the project IU chose after When Life Gives You Tangerines and Byeon chose after Lovely Runner, it drew attention from the moment the casting was announced.

Its nationwide Nielsen Korea rating opened at 7.8% for Episode 1, first reached double digits with Episode 4 and peaked at 13.8% with the finale. Internationally it was released on Disney+ (including Hulu in the United States). MBC said cumulative viewing time topped 43 million hours in its first 28 days, and that even excluding Asia-Pacific performance it was the most-watched Korean series in regions including North America, Europe and Latin America. In Good Data Corporation's FUNdex buzz rankings for TV and OTT dramas, it held the No. 1 spot from its premiere through mid-May.

In Episode 11's coronation scene, the officials shout "cheonse" ("a thousand years") instead of "manse" ("ten thousand years"), and the king wears a nine-strand myeonryugwan crown prescribed for vassal-state rulers, prompting accusations of historical distortion for portraying Korea as a vassal state of China. The production team apologized on the day of the finale, followed in turn by IU, Byeon Woo-seok and writer Yoo Ji-won. MBC corrected the scene's audio and subtitles for reruns, VOD and OTT, and then decided to delete the ending scene of Episode 11 altogether. In an interview after the series ended, director Park Joon-hwa apologized on behalf of the production team, saying the scene should have used symbols of the Korean Empire rather than Joseon court protocol. After the finale, a public petition to the National Assembly demanding that the series be pulled from broadcast and the content scrapped gathered more than 50,000 signatures. Some fans, on the other hand, argued that it was an error in historical research rather than intentional distortion. Production of a Blu-ray that had been available for preorder fell through on June 15, and those behind it did not give a specific reason.
