Live-action films occupied the top spots at the box office in the third quarter of 2024. Kingdom: Return of the Great General (8.03 billion yen), released in July, and Last Mile (5.96 billion yen), an original-screenplay film released in August, ranked first and second among live-action films in the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan's 2024 tally, and Koki Mitani's All About Suomi (1.77 billion yen) also passed 1 billion yen. A Samurai in Time, a self-produced film that opened at a single Tokyo theater in August, expanded its run and went on to win Picture of the Year at the following year's Japan Academy Film Prize, while Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cloud was selected as Japan's entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Unless otherwise noted, box office figures are as tallied by the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan as of the end of January 2025. The association counts December releases in the following year's tally.
